ARE YOU USING YOUR FREE TIME FOR GROWTH – OR FOR DECLINE

haleyn4

We are fortunate to be living during a time when there are an unlimited number of options for how we use our free time. Not all of those options are created equal. Some are growth producing and lead to increased health, happiness, and quality of life. Some, however, are growth reducing and lead to physical and cognitive decline, decreased quality of life, and decreased longevity.

Among growth-producing activities are exercise and other forms of movement, reading, activities related to the arts, learning new information and skills, spending quality time with others, and stress management activities such as meditation. Growth reducing activities include excessive time being sedentary, undisciplined indulging in food, mindless TV watching and web surfing (some TV watching and web surfing can be growth producing, especially if it’s not excessive), substance use, and limited exposure to lifelong learning.

The enticing thing about growth reducing activities is that they are easy to do in the present moment. The obvious opposite side of the coin is that they prepare you for decline over the long term.

Think about this! There are no older adults who regret being healthy or being cognitively sharp or having lots of friends. There just might be a lesson in there, and it can be applied wherever you are in the lifespan.
